Nico Miguel Hernández (* 4. January 1996 in Wichita , Kansas ) is an American boxer in the flyweight .

Amateur career

Nico Hernández practiced soccer and wrestling and was one of the best cross-country runners in Kansas in high school . He first started boxing at the age of nine with his father, who runs a boxing club in Wichita. The 1.64 m tall left boom won the National Junior Olympics in 2011 and 2012 and the National Golden Gloves in 2013 .

In 2014 he won the US Youth Championships and the National WSB Team Trials, and he also won the silver medal at the American Youth Championships in Ecuador . He was only eliminated 1: 2 in the final match against the Ecuadorian Carlos Chusin. At the 2014 Youth World Championships in Bulgaria , he fought his way to the quarter-finals against Romanian Alexandru Ioniță (3-0) and Mongolian Tumurkhuyag Bat-Ochir (2-1), where he lost to Azerbaijanist Rüfət Hüseynov (1: 2) but in the fight for 5th place the Turks Mert Karakılıç (3-0).

In March 2016 he took part in the American Olympic qualification in Argentina and only lost in the final fight against the Colombian Yuberjen Martínez (0: 3), which gave him a starting place at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil . There he defeated the Italian Manuel Cappai (3-0) in the preliminary round, the Russian Vasily Yegorow ( 3-0) in the second round and Carlos Quipo from Ecuador ( 3-0) in the quarter-finals , making him one of the medals. In the fight for the final, he was eliminated against Hasanboy Doʻsmatov (0: 3) and thus won a bronze medal.

Professional career

In February 2017, at a press conference in Kansas, Nico Hernández announced that he had signed a professional contract with promoter Knockout Night Boxing . He made his professional debut on March 25, 2017 in Mulvane, Kansas, and won by giving up his opponent.

On May 19, 2018, he won the IBA flyweight title by beating Szilveszter Kanalas.
