Ramiro II (León)
Ramiro II the Great (el Grande) (* around 900 ; † 951 ) was the son of King Ordoño II of León . He was King of León from 931 until his death.
At first he was only ruler of a small part of Asturias . In 931, after the abdication of his brother Alfonso IV of León, he received the Crown of León and with it Galicia .
Ramiro made an alliance with the Kingdom of Navarre and the Crown of Aragon , which defeated the Muslims in the Battle of Simancas (939). This victory made it possible to move the border of the kingdom of León from the Douro River to the Tormes River .
In the last year of his reign he could not prevent the independence of the Kingdom of Castile under the leadership of Fernán González . He fought the Moors until his death ; in 950 he made an attack in the valley of the Tagus and defeated the Muslims at Talavera de la Reina .
