The Berlitz language schools (current name: Berlitz Corporation ) go back to a language school founded by Maximilian Delphinius Berlitz in 1878 in Providence , Rhode Island , USA. They have developed into an international group with currently 550 schools in over 70 countries. The teaching method used by all Berlitz language schools is what is known as immersion . From the very first lesson, teaching is exclusively in the target language.

history

Berlitz Deutschland GmbH tells the story of how its teaching method came about as follows:

Berlitz emigrated from Germany to the USA in 1872 to teach Greek, Latin and six other European languages. After teaching as a private tutor for a number of years, he became professor of French and German language teaching at Warner Polytechnic College .

Berlitz was the owner, dean, rector and the only faculty member at the same time. He needed an assistant who could teach French, so he hired a French man named Nicholas Joly. However, when Joly arrived in Providence, it turned out that he didn't speak English. Weakened from overwork, Berlitz called in sick and asked Joly to take over the lessons to the best of his ability. Berlitz asked his assistant to point to the objects, repeat the French word for them and demonstrate verbs.
