Daniel Eberlin (baptized December 4, 1647 in Nuremberg ; † between August 24, 1714 and July 5, 1715 in Kassel ) was a German conductor and composer .

Life

Daniel Eberlin writes in the foreword to his trio sonatas that he was a pupil of Adam Drese , for which the period between 1661 and 1663 comes into question. Eberlin was first mentioned in 1661, as a treble player, in the Gotha court orchestra under the direction of Wolfgang Carl Briegel . Between 1667 and 1678 he was court musician at the Eisenacher Hofkapelle and was mentioned several times. In 1668, through the mediation of the Hessian landgrave, he enjoyed a musical education in Rome . In the foreword to his trio sonatas, he himself mentions contacts with Orazio Benevoli , Lelio Colista and Francesco Foggia . Then he should be asCaptain of the papal troops in Morea fought against the Turks .

In 1673 Eisenach received payment for compositions. In autumn 1678, Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel called him to his court to reorganize the court chapel there. In 1685 Eberlin returned to Eisenach as Kapellmeister , where he was appointed to Münzwardein in 1689 . Due to irregularities - the Duke is said to have illegally minted coins from table silver and foreign coins, which was prohibited by imperial edicts - Eberlin fled Eisenach in 1692 and became a banker in Hamburg . In the last phase of his life there are only notes from Telemann, according to which he was last captain of the Landmilitia in Kassel. The details of the date and place of his death are also very imprecise. The composer and officer Georg von Bertouch (1668–1743) is counted among Eberlin's students .

Eberlin married Franzisca Wilhelmina Frischleben in Nuremberg in 1673 and had eight children with her. The second daughter, Amalia Louise Juliane († 1711), was the first wife of the composer Georg Philipp Telemann .

Act

Eberlin created cantatas and composed a collection of trio sonatas of high musical quality. However, only a few of his works have survived. Johann Christoph Bach composed 15 harpsichord variations to Eberlin's virtuoso violin solo from the aria Pro dormente Camilloaus from the cantata Ich will in aller Noth… . According to Telemann, Eberlin experimented with the tonal possibilities of the violin scordature and calculated that " the violin could be out of tune 2000 times ".
