Clayton Laurent

Clayton Laurent (* 18th July 1990 to the United States Virgin Islands ) is an amateur boxer in the super heavyweight (over 91 kg) of the US Virgin Islands.

Career

In 2007 Laurent, still 17 years old, took part in the World Championships , but lost in the first fight against Azer Mamadov, Azerbaijan (TKO 3rd). In 2008 he took part in the American Olympic qualification tournament, but lost in the semifinals to Michael Hunter , United States (25: 5).

At the 2009 World Championships Laurent won his first fight against Olympian Onorede Ehwareme, Nigeria (10: 8), but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Primislav Dimovski, Macedonia (12: 0). The Central American and Caribbean Games in 2010 also ended early for Laurent. After a victory in the round of 16, he lost in the quarter-finals to Gilton Benjey Zimmerman, Netherlands Antilles (3-0). In 2011 Laurent succeeds after two unsuccessful attempts, u. a. he just fails at Ítalo Perea , Ecuador (15:14), the qualification for the Pan American Games 2011 , in which he was then eliminated in the first fight against Gerardo Bisbal, Puerto Rico (20:11). At the American Olympic qualification tournament in 2012, Laurent lost to the Brazilian Gidelson Oliveira (16:11) in the first fight .

In 2014 Laurent took part in the Central American and Caribbean Games for the second time and was defeated in the first fight by Yoandris Toirac . Cuba , with 3-0 judges votes. Also at the Pan American Games in 2015 he lost in the first fight against Rafael Lima, Brazil (2-1). In 2015 Laurent was used by the Puerto Rico Hurricans three times in the World Series of Boxing and was able to win all three. Among other things, he beat Edgar Muñoz , Venezuela (3: 0), and Guido Vianello , Italy (2: 1). After these successes, Laurent's greatest success so far followed in 2016: In the American Olympic qualification tournament, he won his first fight against Aaron Huggins, Canada (3-0), before losing in the semifinals to Lenier Pero , Cuba (3-0). The two winners of the semi-finals qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , the two losers had to fight for the remaining qualification place. In this fight Laurent faced the Argentinean Kevin Espindola, whom he impressively knocked out in the first round and thus qualified for the Olympic Games.

There Laurent met the German Erik Pfeifer in his first fight and beat him on points. Then Laurent was very unlucky when he had to face the strong French world champion from 2015 Tony Yoka in his next fight , against whom he had no chance (Yoka was Olympic champion at those Olympic Games).
