Edgar Ramón Muñoz Mata (born December 22, 1983 in Nueva Esparta ) is a Venezuelan boxer . He was a participant in the 2004 and 2016 Olympic Games .

Career

Muñoz 'first international tournament was the 2002 South American Games in Belem , where he won the silver medal in the light heavyweight division (up to 81 kg). At the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo in 2003 , he then won the bronze medal after losing in the semifinals against Ramiro Reducindo , Mexico , with 15: 8 points. In 2004, Muñoz started at the American Olympic qualification tournament in Tijuana and was able to win it. Thus, Muñoz won a starting place at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . Here he beat Marijo Šivolija , Croatia (31:32) in the preliminary round , before he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the later silver medalist Mahamed Aryphadschyjeu , Belarus (18:10).

What happened next should be symptomatic of Muñoz 'further career: Muñoz did not take part in any international tournaments or championships until the beginning of the qualification phase for the next Olympic Games. Muñoz only reappeared in 2007 at his first and for a long time only world championships . Here he was eliminated in the heavyweight division (up to 91 kg) starting in the first fight against Babacar Kamara , Sweden (24: 9). He then tried to make up for the missed qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games at the American Olympic qualification tournament in 2016, but failed in the quarter-finals to Rafael Lima , Brazil (8: 4).

After another long break, Muñoz again took part in the American Olympic qualifying tournament in 2012, but failed again in the quarterfinals. This time against Yamil Peralta , Argentina (15: 7).

After the third long career break, Muñoz surprisingly appeared in 2015 as a super heavyweight fighter (over 91 kg) of the Caciques Venezuela in the World Series of Boxing . But he was only able to win three of seven match fights. Among other things, he lost to Clayton Laurent , Guido Vianello and Filip Hrgović . In 2016 he also fought two fights for the Caciques Venezuela, but lost both. In July 2015, Muñoz took part in the Pan American Games 2016 and reached the final, which he lost to the Cuban Lenier Pero with 2-1 judges' votes and thus won the silver medal. For him it was the first medal at an international championship in 12 years and up to then also the greatest success of his career. The Pan American Championships in August of the same year also ended with a final defeat against Peron and thus with another silver medal. In October 2015, of course, Muñoz also started at the World Championships in Doha , but already retired in the first fight against Mohamed Arjaoui , Morocco , due to a technical knockout in the 3rd round. Muñoz then tried to catch up on the missed qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro at the American Olympic qualification tournament in March 2016, but failed in the first fight against Nigel Paul , Trinidad and Tobago (3-0). As a fighter in the World Series of Boxing, Muñoz was eligible to compete in the last Olympic qualifying tournament in July 2016 in Vargas . He was able to win this and qualified for the Olympic Games for the second time in his career.
