Sidi Smail or Sidi Smaïl ( Arabic سيدي اسماعيل; Central Atlas Tamazight ⵙⵉⴷⵉ ⵙⵎⴰⵄⵉⵍ Sidi Smaɛil ) is a Moroccan town of about 5,000 and capital of a rural community ( commune rurale ) with about 30,000 inhabitants in the province of El Jadida in the region Casablanca-Settat .

Sidi Smail is located about 48 km south of El Jadida in the historical Doukkala region at an altitude of about 145 m above sea level. d. M .; the distance to Marrakech is about 154 km in a southeast direction. The climate is influenced to a large extent by the Atlantic and is temperate by Moroccan standards.

The population is predominantly of Berber descent and most of them immigrated from the surrounding mountainous regions in the second half of the 20th century. In addition to the Berber dialects , Moroccan Arabic is also spoken .
economy
The inhabitants of earlier times lived on their own crops and a little cattle-raising as a self-sufficient living . This situation gradually changed only during the French Protectorate and after the independence of Morocco. Sidi Smail is now an important transport hub with numerous small traders as well as craft and service companies.
history
Nothing is known about the earlier history of the place. A regionally important brotherhood ( zaouia ) in honor of the local saint has existed for several centuries .
Attractions
Apart from a group of three marabout tombs and a modern mosque, the largely modern place has no historically or culturally significant sights.
