Michael Hunter (born July 10, 1988 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) is an American boxer .
His greatest successes in the professional career are winning the international heavyweight titles of the IBO and WBA in 2018.
Amateur career
Michael Hunter grew up in Las Vegas and started boxing there in 2002, animated by his father, who was a former professional boxer. He developed under the guidance of his trainer Michael Newson Jr. with a height of 1.83 m to an excellent super heavyweight with a fighting weight of almost 100 kg body weight. In addition to boxing, Michael Hunter also enjoys playing basketball and football.
In 2006, Michael Hunter was American junior champion (under 19) in the super heavyweight division. He was then used at the Junior World Championships in Agadir. There he won over Andrei Wolkow, Russia (32:26) on points and over Pawel Kulda, Lithuania by breaking off in the 4th round. In the semifinals he lost to Christian Ciocan, Romania on points (15:22). He won a bronze medal right away at his first start in an international championship. In the same year he started at the National Golden Gloves and finished there after a point defeat in the final fight against Felix Stewart an excellent 2nd place.
In January 2007 he took part in the US elimination for the Pan American Games in Colorado Springs and was defeated there in the final with a tie of 16:16 against Jonte Willis only because of the better points from Willis. At the USA Championship, which also took place in Colorado Springs, Michael Hunter then achieved his first big win in the seniors. With victories over John Parsons, Lenroy Thompson and Mike Wilson , he became the American super heavyweight champion. He had his first international missions in May 2007 in two international matches in Regina, Canada . He won the first fight against the Canadian Didier Bence on points (40:34) and had to admit defeat to the same boxer just on points in the second fight (28:30).
In August 2007, Michael Hunter also won the US Olympic Super Heavyweight Trials in Houston. He won over James Nate, Andrew Shepherd and twice over Kimdo Bethel on points. In October 2007 he also represented his country at the World Championship for Amateurs in Chicago . As a newcomer to the international boxing scene, he cut an excellent figure. He won there over Andrew Ruiz Ponce from Mexico by breaking off in the 3rd round and defeated Kurban Günebakan from Turkey (30: 7) and Jassem Delevari from Iran (19:13) on points. In the quarter-finals he met the Russian Islam Timursijew , to whom he was defeated on points (15:22). He finished 5th in the super heavyweight division, which in view of the fact that only 16 super heavyweights are allowed to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , but not enough for the Olympic qualification.
In November 2007, Michael Hunter took part in the Olympic test tournament in Beijing with the US team. He won there over Paramjeet Samota from India by breaking off in the 2nd round and over Rustam Rygebajew from Kazakhstan on points (24:20) and was defeated in the final to Russian Denis Sergejew just on points (18:21). He took 2nd place. In February 2008 Michael Hunter started in two international matches against Russia . In Magnitogorsk he managed to take revenge against Denis Sergejew, because he defeated him on points (23:13) and in Novosibirsk he defeated the Russian starter Shamil Gadschiew on points (26: 6).
At the American Olympic elimination for Beijing in Port of Spain / Trinidad , he fought his way into the final with points wins over Oscar Rivas from Colombia (11: 4) and Clayton Laurent from the Virgin Islands (25: 5), in which he beat Cuban Robert Alfonso faced. In this match Alfonso turned out to be the better and clearly won with 9: 1 goals. Since only the tournament winner qualified for Beijing, Michael Hunter also started at the second American Olympic elimination tournament in Guatemala City . He won there over Didier Bence just on points (4: 3), but surprisingly lost in the semifinals against Jose Payares from Venezuela on points (3:10) and thus again failed to qualify for the Olympics.
In 2009 Michael Hunter was again USA super heavyweight champion. In the final he won over Javier Torres clearly on points (31:12). At the 2009 World Championships in Milan he was unlucky, because he met the Italian local hero, the Olympic champion and world champion Roberto Cammarelle , against whom he lost on points in the round of the last "32" (1: 8) in the first round . He was eliminated and together with all the losers of this round finished 17th.
In 2010 Michael Hunter did not take part in any championships. In 2011 he won the National Golden Gloves Tournament in the heavyweight division with four demolition wins and one point win. In July 2011 he won the so-called "Trials" in the heavyweight division for the US team for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. In the final he defeated Joseph Williams on points (21: 9). Before taking part, however, he still had to qualify. He achieved this in May 2012 by winning the American qualifying tournament in Rio de Janeiro. It took four wins there in the heavyweight division. He won the final fight against Yamil Peralta from Argentina on points (12:10).
Michael Hunter had bad luck twice at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. For the first time he met one of the favorites in the heavyweight division in the first round, namely the Russian Artur Beterbijew . He fought this one big fight, which ended up with a score of 10:10. The judges then decided for Beterbijew as the winner, while Michael Hunter had to retire and only came in 9th place.
Profile career
At the beginning of 2013, Michael Hunter joined the professionals. He played his first two fights in 2013, which he won. He won the following 10 boxing matches, four each in 2014 and 2015 and two encounters in 2016, including the first title fight for the WBO NABO cruiserweight title. This was followed in 2017 by a loss on points in the title fight for the WBO World Cruiserweight Championship against Oleksandr Usyk . He then won contested boxing matches in 2018, including against Martin Illnga for the international heavyweight title of the IBO and against Alexander Ustinov for the international heavyweight title of the WBA .
