David Price (* 6. July 1983 in Liverpool ) is an English boxer and bronze medalist of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in the super heavyweight.

Amateur career

Price began boxing as a teenager and grew up to be a super heavyweight at a junior age, weighing around 110 kg with a height of 2.05 m. He belongs to the Salisbury ABC Liverpool . His club coach there is Tony Challindor.

At the age of 19, he became English champion (ABS champion) in the super heavyweight division in 2003. He was the youngest English champion in this weight class since 1984. Since he was accepted into the English national team of boxers in the same year, he has been trained by the coaching team David Alloway, Paul Walmsley and Terry Edwards (head coach).

In 2003 he started for the first time in the English national relay as part of an international match between England and the United States. He defeated the American starter Travis Kauffmann in the super heavyweight division by breaking off in the 3rd round.

In 2004 Price took part in the Tammer Tournament in Tampere and was knocked out in the final by Bermane Stiverne from Canada . He was nevertheless used at the European Championships of the same year in Pula , but lost there in his first fight in the quarter-finals against Roberto Cammarelle from Italy on points. In 2004 he also took part in the Commonwealth Confederations Tournament in Kuala Lumpur and won this tournament with victories over Muzzafer Iqbal from Pakistan a . Justin Whitehead from Australia .

In 2005 he won the 4 Nations Tournament in Liverpool with victories over Giano Nardari, Canada, Adam Forsyth, Australia and David Dolan, England . At the 2005 World Championships in Mianyang / China he lost his first fight, as he did at the 2004 European Championships. The Finn Robert Helenius defeated him on points. He was eliminated before reaching the round of 16 and finished 17th in the final account together with the other losers of this round.

In 2006 Price started at the Strandja Tournament in Plovdiv for the first time . There he met in the semifinals on Vyacheslav Hlaskow from Ukraine and had to be taken out of the fight against this opponent in the third round. The 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne became the first highlight of his career. He won the four fights he needed to win this championship, all ahead of schedule. His opponents were Taraiasi Nedrakoro Rasanbal from Fiji , David Weenink, New Zealand , Varghese Johnson, India and in the final battle Kevan Evans from Wales .

In 2007, Price took 2nd place in the super heavyweight division at the Strandja Tournament in Plovdiv . After winning points over the German Boris Boshenko, he lost to Rustam Saidov from Uzbekistan on points (20:35). At the 2007 Commonwealth Championship in Liverpool he defeated his opponents Baljeet from India , Eric Martel-Bahveli from Canada a. Daniel Beahan from Australia prematurely and won this championship. He then got tougher opponents at the 2007 World Cup in Chicago . He won there over Marko Tomasovic from Croatia on points (23:11), Mohamed Samoudi from France by breaking off in the 2nd round and over Primislaw Dimowski from Macedonia on points. For his semi-final fight against Roberto Cammarelle , the eventual world champion , he could no longer compete due to an injury sustained in the fight against Dimowski. He finished 5th in the super heavyweight division.

Since this placement was not enough for the qualification for the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008, he took part in February 2008 in Pescara in the first European qualification tournament. He won there over Nelson Hysa from Albania by breaking off in the 2nd round and against Krzysztof Glowacki from Poland by knocking out in the 4th round. Since he lost his next fight against David Arshba from Azerbaijan just on points (17:19), his placement was still not enough for the Olympic qualification. He therefore started at the second European qualifying tournament in Athens . There he won over Magomed Abduslamow from Belarus by breaking off in the 3rd rune and over Alan Beganovic, CGR, by breaking off in the 2nd round and defeated the junior world champion Cristian Ciocan from Romania clearly on points in the semifinals . He was qualified for Beijing and therefore did not take part in the final battle against Jaroslavas Jakšto from Lithuania .

As the last test before the Olympic Games, Price played the EU championship in Cetniewo / Poland in June 2008 . He won there over Krzysztof Glowacki by breaking off in the 1st round and came in the final battle to a non-fighting victory over Istvan Bernath from Hungary .

At the Olympic Games in Beijing defeated the reigning Russian European champion Islam Timursiev after 31 seconds of the 2nd round by knockout in his first fight . He also won his next fight against Jaroslavas Jakšto prematurely in the 2nd round. In the semifinals he was defeated by the reigning world champion Roberto Cammarelle from Italy by breaking off in the 2nd round. He won a bronze medal with it .

Professional career

In 2009 Price moved to the pros and in 2012 won the English Championship in his twelfth fight against John McDermott and in his 13th fight the British and Commonwealth titles against Sam Sexton. He then defended both titles early against Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton .

On February 23, 2013 he finally lost through TKO ( Technical Knockout ) in the second round against the 12 years older, 1: 7 outsider Tony Thompson .

In the heavyweight rematch on July 6, 2013 Price lost again to Tony Thompson, this time in the fifth round. In the first few laps Price kept his opponent at a good distance and landed some good hits. But then he got involved with Thompson several times in an exchange of blows in the half distance and received many hard blows as a result. In lap five, Thompson finally drove his opponent in front of him with more hard punches until he was able to catch him on the ring and covered with more punches. Referee Marcus McDonnell interrupted the fight, counted David Price standing and then stopped the fight.

Then he switched to the German Sauerland Promotion and gave up his English title. For this he returned on the road to success and was built up as a contender for the European championship title. The championship fight in Ludwigsburg against Erkan Teper on July 17th. But he lost surprisingly clearly with KO in the second round. Already in the first round he could not overcome Teper’s compact cover with his jab , he kept getting on the defensive and took hard hits. In the second round, a left hook to the chin brought Price down lengthways. It was a considerable time before he came to.

On February 4, 2017, he also lost prematurely to Christian Hammer .

On March 31, 2018 he was in the ring against the Russian ex-world champion Alexander Powetkin in Cardiff . In a tough fight on both sides, Price first fell to the ground in the second round, but quickly got up again. In the fourth round Price managed to hit Powetkin hard with a few hits, only the corner of the ring prevented the Russian from going down. In the fifth round it was again Powetkin who managed to knock down. Here Price was badly knocked out , whereby the referee stopped the fight immediately. Similar to the fight against Teper, he needed some time (and medical attention) but was able to leave the ring on his own.
