Roman Romanowitsch Romantschuk ( Russian Роман Романович Романчук ; born June 3, 1979 in Stryj , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ; † September 8, 2016 in Odessa , Ukraine ) was a Russian amateur boxer of Ukrainian origin.

career

Southerner Romantschuk, whose father was also a successful amateur boxer, became a Ukrainian champion in 1995 before accepting Russian citizenship. In 2004 and 2006 he was Russian heavyweight champion (up to 91 kg). In 2002 and 2003 he took second place after losing in the final to another southpaw Alexander Alexejew .

Since his rival Alexejew was the Russian heavyweight representative at international highlights, Romancechuk was initially only nominated for a few major tournaments. In 2002 he finished third as a light heavyweight at the World Cup in Astana with the Russian national relay.

In 2005 he took part in the World Championships in Mianyang . He came there as a substitute for the cancer patient Islam Timursiev in the super heavyweight class and came in second. He defeated Rustam Saidov in the quarterfinals and Roberto Cammarelle in the semifinals . In the final, however, he had to admit defeat Odlanier Solís , although he had defeated the Cuban in two previous matches, in the final of amateur tournaments in Bulgaria in 2003 and the Czech Republic in 2004.

After the world championship, Alexejew switched to the professional camp and Romantschuk then became the Russian representative up to 91 kg (Timursijew had recovered and took the place in the open class). At the 2006 European Championships in Plovdiv , he penetrated the heavyweight division with three early wins, including in the semifinals against Alexander Powernow , in the final battle and was the clear favorite to win the title. His opponent, surprise finalist Denys Pojazyka from Ukraine , was able to decide the fight by breaking off in the third round and win the title. At the Russian championships in 2007 he was surprisingly defeated in the final by Rachim Tschakchijew 25:28 and was then not nominated for the 2007 World Championship.

In preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games , the Russian Olympic team completed a training camp in Vladivostok , in which Romancechuk participated as a training partner for the qualified boxers. While visiting a night bar, the drunk Romantschuk got into an argument with the 22-year-old local Oleg Meschkow on the morning of July 28, 2008. Meshkov, who was carrying a pistol with rubber bullets, drew the weapon in the course of the argument, fired at Romancechuk and injured his head. Romancechuk then snatched the gun from him and shot back, causing a serious head injury. The alarmed police then arrested Romancechuk. Meshkov was hospitalized, but died a little later from his injury. In March 2009, Romantschuk was sentenced to 14 months in prison for negligent homicide because he had exceeded the limits of self-defense in the incident.

On September 8, 2016, Romantschuk died of a heart attack at the age of 37 .
