Oreocereus is a genus of plants inthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The botanical name is derived from the Greek noun oreo for "mountain" and refers to the range of the plants.
description
The species of the genus Oreocereus grow bushy, branch from the base only sparsely and reach heights of growth of 2 to 3 meters. Tribes are rarely trained. The upright, pendulous, or rarely stuck out cylindrical shoots are notched or warty between the ribs. The areoles often have long white hair and dense thorns .
The tubular to funnel-shaped, more or less radial symmetry , orange to red to purple flowers arise near the tip of the shoot, or sometimes from the terminal cephalium , and open during the day. The flower tube is straight to slightly curved and sometimes compressed to the side. The numerous areoles on the pericarpel and the flower tube are hairy. The spherical to elongated fruits contain wide oval, matt or glossy black seeds .
Systematics and distribution
Oreocereus is found in the Andes at altitudes of over 3000 meters, in the south of Peru , in the north of Chile , in the south of Bolivia and in the north of Argentina . Alwin Berger established Oreocereus in 1905 as a subgenus of Cereus ( Cereus subg. Oreocereus ). Vincenzo Riccobono then raised the sub-genus to the rank of a genus in 1909. The type species of the genus is Pilocereus celsianus .
The genus includes the following species:
- Oreocereus celsianus (Lem. In Salm-Dyck) Riccob.
- Oreocereus doelzianus (Backeb.) Borg
- Oreocereus hempelianus (gherkin) DRHunt
- Oreocereus leucotrichus (Phil.) Wagenkn.
- Oreocereus pseudofossulatus D.R. Hunt
- Oreocereus ritteri Cullmann
- Oreocereus tacnaensis F. Knight
- Oreocereus trollii (Kupper) Backeb.
- Oreocereus varicolor Backeb.
Synonyms of the genus are Arequipa Britton & Rose , Morawetzia Backeb. and Arequipiopsis cross. & Buining .
