Michael Sprott (born January 16, 1975 in Reading ) is a British heavyweight boxer.

amateur

As an amateur, Sprott achieved third place in the 1995 British super heavyweight championships and second place in 1996. A participation in the Olympic Games in 1996 he did not succeed because he failed in the qualifying tournament to Jean-Francois Bergeron .

Professional career

Sprott turned pro in 1996. In 1998 and 2000 he suffered premature defeats against two unknown English opponents. Sprott has comparatively little power, has average taker skills, is a normal boom, but is mostly fit and has above-average technical qualities.

In 2001 he caused a stir when he was able to beat Timo Hoffmann , who had previously only lost to Vitali Klitschko on points. He lost the direct rematch against Hoffmann in Germany officially, but controversially on points. Corrie Sanders knocked him out in the first round in South Africa that same year.

In 2002 he got the opportunity to box for the heavyweight titles of Great Britain and the Commonwealth . Although he lost prematurely to Danny Williams , but was able to make the fight completely balanced and showed that he belongs at least to the British, if not European top class. Later that year, however, he managed a rare knockout victory over his strong compatriot Pele Reid . After another six wins there was a rematch with Williams, again he went KO after a good performance. The third encounter with Williams in January 2004 he was then able to decide on points in his favor. However, he had to give up the belt in his first title defense in April 2004, he lost by knockout in the twelfth round against Matt Skelton .

Against the previously undefeated Cengiz Koç he managed to win the EU championship in 2005, but he was defeated on points to the European champion Paolo Vidoz . He then lost extremely controversial on points against Wolodymyr Wirtschis .

In 2006 he won the EU championship again, but went KO in the next fight against the undefeated amateur star Ruslan Chagayev . In November 2006 he defeated René Dettweiler in a defense of his EU title.

On February 17, 2007, he landed the biggest win of his career when he defeated Olympic champion Audley Harrison . He was on the ground in the first round but had a hard knockout on Harrison in the third round with a left hook.

Special

There was a scandal on September 15, 2012, when Sprott lost in Bamberg to the German heavyweight Edmund Gerber by technical knockout in the 4th round. Sprott, angry about the unjustified termination of the fight in his eyes, pushed the referee to the ground and was therefore suspended for three months. On December 15, 2012 - exactly on the first day after the suspension expired - Sprott competed again in Germany. This time he defeated Edmund Gerber on points.
