Agnes von Andechs (* around 1215; † before January 7, 1263 ) from the house of Andechs-Dießen was Duchess of Austria and Styria (1230–1243) and Duchess of Carinthia (1256–1263).

Life

As the daughter of Duke Otto I of Andechs-Meranien and Beatrix of Burgundy , she was the heiress of the Andechs estates on the lower Inn (Neuburg and Schärding, at the time Formbacher possessions) and in Carniola and the Windischen Mark (the latter came from the Weichselburgers ). She was also a great-granddaughter of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa .

In 1229 she married Friedrich , the son of Duke Leopold VI. of Austria and Styria. Friedrich had just cast out his first wife Sophie of Hungary, who had not given birth to any children, named herself dominus Carniolae (Lord of Carniola) in view of the dowry of his new wife and in 1230 succeeded his deceased father in the duchies of Austria and Styria.

Agnes soon became involved in the armed conflicts of her husband with the Hungarians and also with the emperor . B. 1236 defend the Riegersburg against one's own relatives; in doing so, she herself was taken prisoner.

In 1238 things looked different. You can find her together with her uncle Berthold, Patriarch of Aquileia , in a document on the occasion of the settlement of Michelstetten / Velesovo (nö. Krainburg ) by Viennese Dominican women .

In 1243 she had to regretfully note that Friedrich had been able to get her divorce due to childlessness.

In 1248, the way to a second marriage with Ulrich von Spanheim was paved for her, the son of the Carinthian Duke Bernhard . From 1250 she is recorded as Ulrich's wife (Duke 1256–69); now she had given him the right to Krain and the Windische Mark ("Herr von Krain"). However, Friedrich had retained the areas on the lower Inn. She is said to have had two children with Ulrich, who, however, died early. She herself died before / around 1263 and is buried in Parakeet .

Her dowry, Carniola and the Windische Mark, went to Przemysl Ottokar after Ulrich's death, as did Carinthia .
