Enzo Maccarinelli (* 20th August 1980 in Swansea , Wales ) is a former British professional boxer and former world champion of the WBO in the cruiserweight division .

Career

In the amateurs he was nine times Welsh champion and in the adults (elite class) he won each of his twelve fights by knockout . In 1999 he moved to the professional camp with his trainer Charlie Pearson. After three wins, he suffered a knockout defeat against southpaw Lee Swaby in May 2000. Another ten wins followed by mid-2003, seven of them prematurely. In June 2003 he defeated Bruce Scott in the fight for the vacant WBU title prematurely in the fourth round. He then won seven title defenses and two more fights, seven of them prematurely. Among the defeated opponents were Garry Delaney, Ismail Abdoul, Jesper Kristiansen and Mark Hobson, who were counted among the European middle class.

He achieved promotion in July 2006 with a tKo victory in the ninth round against ex- WBC world champion Marcelo Domínguez . A long-planned fight against WBO world champion Johnny Nelson then did not materialize, as Nelson was injured, among other things, and then even resigned the title. Maccarinelli was then named the new WBO world champion in September 2006 without a fight. He defended the title safely through knockout against Mark Hobson, Bobby Gunn and the undefeated Mohamed Azzaoui, as well as unanimously on points against ex-WBC world champion Wayne Braithwaite .

In March 2008 he was defeated in the second round by David Haye , who rose to the title holder of the WBO, WBC and WBA . After a win against Mathew Ellis, Maccarinelli then lost prematurely against Ola Afolabi and Denis Lebedew .

This was followed by two progressive victories and in April 2010 winning the European Cruiserweight Championship ( EBU ) by winning the first round against the Russian Alexander Kotlobay. In his first title defense in September 2010, he lost to Alexander Frenkel . In his next seven fights, he came out six times, including the British Cruiserweight Championship and the Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Championship. His defeat during this period he suffered against Ovill McKenzie, but he defeated in the rematch.

On April 5, 2014 he boxed in Rostock against Jürgen Brähmer for the world light heavyweight championship according to the version of the WBA. However, due to a severe swelling in his right eye after the fifth round he had to give up by giving up his corner of the ring.

In December 2015 he defeated Roy Jones junior by knockout in the fourth round.

In June 2016 he lost in the fight for the European Championship against Dmytro Kucher in the first round due to technical knockout.

This fight was probably the last professional fight of his boxing career.
