Arnold Gjergjaj (born October 8, 1984 in Đakovica , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a professional boxer living in Switzerland . On October 4th, 2014, he won the European heavyweight championship ( EBU-EE version ) in the St. Jakobshalle in Basel . This made Gjergjaj (197 cm / 106 kg) the first title holder in this weight class to fight under a Swiss boxing license.
biography
Arnold Gjergjaj and his family came to Switzerland from Đakovica at the age of 14. He graduated from school in Pratteln , canton Basel-Landschaft , and completed an apprenticeship as a heating fitter. He is the most successful heavyweight boxer to ever box under a Swiss license. Gjergjaj has been married since August 2014 and lives with his wife Marta and their son (born 2017) in Pratteln. For his outstanding sporting achievements and his commitment to local youth work, he was awarded the “Prattler Star 2014” on May 23, 2014 by the Pratteln community.
Gjergjaj opened his boxing club "Arnold Boxfit" at his place of residence on January 23, 2016.
Boxing career
Arnold Gjergjaj began as a child with rings . Afterwards he switched to kickboxing and ended up boxing . As a three-time amateur Swiss champion, he switched to the professional camp at the age of 25 in 2009. Since then "the Cobra" has contested 36 fights, of which he has won 33 (24 knockout victories). His boxing role model is the former British world champion Lennox Lewis .
For a long time, mentor Angelo Gallina was both manager and trainer of Gjergjaj, but now "the Cobra" is trained by Beat Ruckli. Since August 2018, Gallina no longer acts as a manager. However, Gjergjaj rarely finds sparring partners in Switzerland, which is why in the past he has repeatedly trained with the world's elite, such as Wladimir Klitschko or Tyson Fury . He also completed training sessions under the late boxing trainer legend Fritz Sdunek . Although he is very afraid of snakes, his battle name is "the Cobra". This is because the venomous snake bites almost as quickly as Gjergjaj strikes: at just under 45 km / h. That Arnold Gjergjaj can not only deal, but also has taker qualities, he proved in his first title defense against Denis Bakhtov . Despite doped opponents (Bakhtov was subsequently suspended), broken hand (4th round) and torn eardrum (5th round), he won unanimously on points.
He lost the fight against former world champion David Haye on May 21, 2016 in London due to a technical knockout in the second round after he had already gone down twice in the first round. So he suffered his first defeat in his 30th fight as a professional. Another defeat followed on December 9, 2017 in his 32nd fight against the little-known Irish boxer Sean Turner, this time by a technical knockout in the eighth round. Arnold Gjergjaj suffered his third defeat on April 19, 2019 in Istanbul. He lost the title fight for the EBU External Heavyweight Title against the Turkish boxer Umut Camkiran after a controversial point decision.
Arnold Gjergjaj ranks 70th in the heavyweight world rankings of the independent platform BoxRec (as of May 19, 2020). His best ranking was 23rd in May 2016.
