The Castle Gavle is located in the Swedish city of Gavle south of Gavleån .

In 1583 Johann III. build a so-called church castle, in which a religious room was the central part. Like many other castles of the Wasa royal dynasty , it had pointed towers. The construction, led by the Belgian architect Willem Boy , was completed in 1597. After several years of decline, the castle was upgraded between 1650 and 1660 and then used as the headquarters of the provincial administration.

After a major fire in 1727 which destroyed the entire top floor, it was decided to convert the building. The architect Carl Hårleman had the castle renovated in the style of French classicism and in 1754 a Landshövding was able to move in again. The Landshövding of Gävleborgs län has its residence here to this day.

The old castle prison stands next to the castle. It also burned down in 1727, but was rebuilt and served as a prison until the 19th century; then after the construction of a new prison as a residence for servants. Today the Swedish Prison Museum is housed in the area.

The castle has been classified as Byggnadsminne since 1935 .
