Eugène Camara
Eugène Camara (born January 21, 1942 in Nzérékoré , † November 22, 2019 in Cairo ) was Prime Minister of Guinea for a short time in February 2007 .
Camara was appointed to this post by President Lansana Conté on February 9, 2007 following a general strike in which Conté had agreed to appoint a new Prime Minister to be head of government. The position of prime minister had remained vacant since April 2006 after Cellou Dalein Diallo was ousted by the president. Camara was the first prime minister in Guinea's history to hold the position of head of government.
Before his appointment, Camara was Minister of State for Presidential Affairs from January 19, 2007, from which he replaced Fodé Bangoura . From November 1997 to 2004 he was Minister of Higher Education and Research and then Minister of Planning from 2004 to January 2007.
The opposition sharply condemned Camara's appeal and refused to cooperate with him as part of the old establishment. Shortly after his inauguration, popular violence broke out in several parts of the country. Union members called strikes on February 12, 2007, and in response Conté declared martial law. The proposal to give Camara a three-month probationary period as prime minister was rejected by trade unionists on February 20. On February 25, it was announced that Comté was ready to select a candidate from a list to be drawn up by trade unionists and members of civil society. The union ended the strike on February 27.
Conté elected Lansana Kouyaté as the new Prime Minister on February 26th . This was sworn in on March 1, 2007 under the chairmanship of Camara, but in the absence of Conté.
Eugène Camara belonged to the Susu tribe .
