Sidya Touré

Sidya Touré (* 1945 ) was Prime Minister of Guinea from 1996 to 1999 .

Political career

Since 1972 he has been involved in various functions with economic and financial issues. From the end of 1990 he was the Cabinet Director of the Prime Minister of Ivory Coast for three years . After working for a company in the agricultural sector for two years, he went into politics.

He became Prime Minister on July 10, 1996 under President Lansana Conté , who has ruled since 1984 . The office of Prime Minister was abolished in December 1984. The president expected him to clean up Guinea's weak economy. His term ended on March 8, 1999 when Lamine Sidimé succeeded him.

On May 20, 2000 he became president of the opposition party Union des Forces Républicaines (UFR). Since then, he has occasionally been briefly detained or summoned in his capacity as opposition leader. First he intended to run for the presidential election in December 2003. His party then boycotted the election, which the incumbent Conté was able to win, as expected, with 95.63% of the vote.
