Cellou Dalein Diallo (born February 3, 1952 in Dalein) was Prime Minister of Guinea from December 2004 to April 2006 . He ran for the presidency several times.

Political career

Diallo comes from Dalein in the Labé prefecture in the center of the country. He studied economics at the University of the capital Conakry and later in Paris . He has been in the civil service since 1976 and worked for the Central Bank of Guinea from 1985 to 1995.

In July 1996 he was appointed to the cabinet of Prime Minister Sidya Touré by President Lansana Conté, who has ruled since 1984 , the first government led by a Prime Minister since 1984. He was Minister for Transport, Telecommunications and Tourism and from 1997 for Transport and Public Works. Since February 2004 he was Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries under Prime Minister François Lonseny . He was appointed Prime Minister on December 9, 2004 after Lonseny Fall had left office in April and went into exile .

Problems during his term of office were protests over the poor economic situation and the high inflation rate as well as the deteriorating health of the president. A critical report about him led to the imprisonment of a newspaper editor in November 2005. The background was corruption allegations that the Prime Minister should have accepted money from a telephone company in return for granting a license. Diallo was dismissed from office on April 5, 2006 by Conté. Since 2007 he has led the party Union des forces démocratiques de Guinée (UFDG).

In 2010 he won the first round of the presidential election, but lost to Alpha Condé in the second round . In 2015 he received the second most votes in the first ballot, but Condé achieved an absolute majority and thus remained president.
