Christopher "Chris" van Heerden (born June 19, 1987 in Johannesburg ) is a South African professional boxer .

Amateur career

Chris van Heerden won 94 of 97 amateur fights and was silver medalist at the 2005 African Championships (zone 6) and bronze medalist at the 2006 African Championships (zone 6).

Professional career

He turned pro in September 2006 and remained undefeated in 15 fights, winning 10 prematurely. He was South African champion and African champion ( ABU ) in welterweight. In 2010 he lost just by a non-unanimous decision (split decision) against Nikola Stevanović in the fight for the IBF intercontinental light middleweight title. He boxed in Belgrade , Serbia , and thus as a professional for the first time outside of South Africa.

In June 2011 he defeated his compatriot Bongani Mwelase in Kempton Park unanimously on points and thus qualified for a world championship fight of the IBO welterweight. He won this title on September 24, 2011 in Kempton Park unanimously on points against Kaizer Mabuza , who had fought for the IBF World Championship in his last fight against Zab Judah .

He won his first title defense in June 2012 also in Kempton Park unanimously against the Argentine Sebastián Andrés Lujan. In March 2013 he denied his second title defense, defeating the Briton Matthew Hatton unanimously in Johannesburg .

In early 2014, he moved to Los Angeles , USA , as he was confronted with an inefficient doctorate in his native South Africa that prevented him from fighting for eleven months. He resigned the IBO title in February of the same year.

After preparing for it under coach Manny Robles, he won his US debut on February 6, 2014 in Hollywood against Mexican Cosme Rivera. In April 2014 he defeated the powerful New Yorker Ray Narh in Santa Monica and secured the IBF International welterweight title on January 9, 2015 in Madison Square Garden by winning points against the previously undefeated Cecil McCalla. In May 2015 he also won prematurely against former WBC youth world champion Ramon Ayala. Since 2014 van Heerden has also been trained by Freddie Roach .

On September 11th, 2015 he had to fight Errol Spence in Toronto for the first time in his career and lost to the referee in the eighth round. He then got back into the ring in April 2016 and defeated the Canadian Steve Claggett in Las Vegas . In October of the same year he was African welterweight champion of the WBA against Sacky Shikukutu.

On April 28, 2018, he defeated the German Timo Schwarzkopf unanimously on points. In March 2019 he defeated Mahonri Montes and in August 2019 Aslanbek Kosayev.

His father was also a boxer and brought his son to the sport. His brother is MMA fighter Danie "Pitbull" van Heerden. Chris van Heerden was already sparring partner of the boxing world champions Miguel Cotto and Saúl Álvarez , as well as the UFC champion Conor McGregor .
