Custio Clayton (born October 5, 1987 in Dartmouth , New Scotland, Canada) is a Canadian professional boxer . He was an Olympian in London in 2012.

Career

Custio Clayton began boxing as a child in a great-uncle's sports school in Dartmouth and had his first fight at the age of 11. At the age of 17 he stopped training for two years because of the high demands of high school. He is now a member of the City of Lakes Boxing Club Dartmouth .

In 2007 and 2008 he finished 5th after losing in the quarter-finals at the Canadian welterweight championship. In 2009 he became Canadian welterweight champion for the first time with a points win in the final over Josh Cameron (11: 5). In 2010 he repeated this success with a points win in the final over Mian Hussain (4: 2). He had to admit defeat to this boxer in the semifinals of the 2011 Canadian Championship (0: 4). In 2012 he won his third Canadian championship title with a points win in the final over Mian Hussain (12: 7).

In 2010 he started at the Pan American Championship in Quito. In the welterweight division he defeated Christian Peguero, Puerto Rico on points (4: 1), but lost in the quarterfinals against Óscar Molina from Mexico just on points (5: 6), with which he was eliminated and finished in 5th place. In October 2010 he was also used at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. There he defeated Joseph Martin Mwaselage, Tanzania, on points and then lost in the round of 16 against Aston Brown, Scotland, on points (1: 4). Therefore he only came in 9th place.

In 2011 he started at the World Championships in Baku. In the welterweight division, he first defeated Kitson Julie from the Seychelles on points (21: 4). In the round of the last "32" he lost against Erroll Spence from the United States on points (9:18). He ended up in this world championship together with all other losers in this round in 17th place.

In May 2012, Custio Clayton managed to qualify for participation in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. It was enough for him to reach the quarter-finals at the American Olympic qualification tournament in Rio de Janeiro. On the way there he beat Jorge Luis Vivas, Colombia (20:10) and Arturo Izquerdo, Costarica (21: 5) each on points. In the quarterfinals he lost to Myke Carvalho from Brazil on points (9:12). He was in very good shape at the London Olympics. He defeated there welterweight Óscar Molina (12: 8) and Cameron Hammond, Australia (14:11) on points. In the quarterfinals he met the British European Champion Fred Evans , whom he delivered a great fight that ended up at 14:14. The judges then decided on Evans as the winner, which was viewed by Custio Clayton and the Canadian team management as a blatant misjudgment. He was eliminated and finished 5th.

Clayton won a bronze medal at the 2013 Pan American Championships in Santiago de Chile .

In 2014 he switched to the professional camp and won his debut on December 19th.

Explanations

  • Welter weight, weight class up to 69 kg body weight
  • OS = Olympic Games, WM = World Championship
  • RS = judges' votes (In 2013 the international boxing world association AIBA abolished the controversial point machines. Judges will again make judgments according to a 10-point system per round)
