Chlumčany (German Chlumcan , Klumtschan ) is a municipality with 2398 inhabitants in the Czech Republic . It is located three kilometers south of Dobřany on the Radbuza and belongs to the Okres Plzeň-jih . The cadastral area is 878 ha.

Chlumčany is located on the edge of the Pilsen basin at 404 m above sea level. M. in the headwaters of the Chlumčanský potok. The route of the European route 53 / state road 27 from Pilsen to Přeštice and the railway line from Pilsen to Klatovy run through the village , at which there is a train stop outside the town in the industrial area. To the north-west of Chlumčany lies the extensive complex of the Dobřany Psychiatric Clinic and to the west the industrial and mining area of ​​the Chlumčany Ceramic Works.

Neighboring towns are Dobřany in the north, Vysoká and Hradčany in the east, Lišice in the southeast, Horní Lukavice and Zastávka in the south, Dnešice in the southwest, Černotín in the west.

history

Chlumčany was first mentioned in a document in 1379. The owners were the Chlumčanský family on Přestavlky . Chlumčany belonged next to Háj to the Přestavlky estate. During the Hussite Wars , Mikuláš Chlumčanský, like his son Jan later, fought on the side of the Catholics and also defended the property of the Chotěšov monastery . In 1496 Mikuláš Vlach acquired the rule, which he sold in 1501 to Matouš of Domaslav. In 1560 Jan Příchovský of Příchovice on Smržovice and Dobříkov became the new landlord. In 1592 the Příchovský sell part of Chlumčany to Johann Wiedersperger von Wiedersperg , who later also bought the other part from the brothers Tobias and Wolf von Domaslav. In 1602 Wiedersperger sold the rule to Mikuláš Vratislav z Mitrovic . Its property was confiscated in 1621 because of participation in the uprising and after its pardon the family got it back in 1631. 1654 was the union of the Chlumčany rule with Dnešice . In 1701 Adam Heinrich von Steinau acquired the property from Jan Antonín z Mitrovic. When Steinau died in 1712, his heirs sold Chlumcan to Ferdinand Mathias von Morzin. In 1773 the minister Carl Friedrich Hatzfeldt zu Gleichen became the owner of Chlumcan and after his death Hugo Damian von Schönborn acquired the manor in 1793 . In 1846 there were 446 people in Chlumcan. The parish has always been Dobrzan .

With the replacement of patrimonial, the place became an independent municipality in 1850. In the second half of the 19th century, the first businesses were established in the village. The discovery of the kaolin deposit between Chlumčany and Dnešice in 1873 led to a change in the character of the place. A kaolin slurry works and the ceramic works were founded. In 1869 the village had 497 inhabitants, this number rose to 981 by 1910. At the end of the 19th century, Johann von Schönborn moved his seat to the Příchovice castle and finally to Prague .

Since 1906 the Schönborn leased their land and the businesses. Isidor Stern became the tenant of the estate. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia, the Schönborn estates were confiscated in 1924 as part of the land reform. During the Allied bombing raid on Wiesengrund in the night of April 7, 1943, 32 bombs also fell on Chlumcan corridors.

Between 1963 and 1964, a large satellite settlement was built on the western edge of the village, after the completion of which the population almost doubled within two years and rose to 2303 by 1966. In 1974 a culture house was built. In 1991 the community had 2234 inhabitants.

The Chlumčany Ceramic Works are one of the largest producers of tiles in the Czech Republic; 95 percent of them are owned by the Lasselsberger Group .
