Several villages emerged around the Cistercian monastery of Nepomuk in Klášter , which was founded by the Ebrach monastery in 1144 . Nepomuk had legal status since 1250 and market rights from 1254 , the place, like the neighboring village of Přesanice, became wealthy in the 13th and 14th centuries through gold soaps and silver mining . In 1384 Přesanice and Nepomuk united. 1413 the place received by Wenzel the lazy , the city rights awarded.
In April 1420 the town and monastery were burned down by Jan Žižka's troops. While the monastery remained desolate, the city was rebuilt by German colonists .

Today's baroque church was built from 1736 under the direction of Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer.
