Gaidarbek Abdulajewitsch Gaidarbekow ( Russian Гайдарбек Абдулаевич Гайдарбеков ; born October 6, 1976 in Kaspijsk ) is a Russian amateur boxer.

Career

Gaidarbekov started boxing in 1991. His first international success was the second place in flyweight at the Junior World Championships in 1994 in Istanbul . In 1999, 2001 and 2002 he became Russian champion.

He finished second at the Goodwill Games in New York in 1998 in the light middleweight division and defeated there in the semifinals Jermain Taylor , but lost in the final fight against the Cuban Juan Hernández . In 2001 he won as a middleweight at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane . In 2004 he defeated Lukas Wilaschek in the final of the European championships in Pula and secured his only European title, in 2002 in Perm he failed early on against the Romanian Lucian Bute .

In 2000, Gaidarbekow took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney and won the silver medal. After victories against Jeff Lacy in the quarter-finals and Zsolt Erdei in the semifinals, he lost to the Cuban Jorge Gutiérrez in the final . In 2004 in Athens he achieved his greatest success, he became Olympic middleweight champion. In the final, he defeated world champion Gennady Golovkin from Kazakhstan on points.

Today Gaidarbekow works for the Dagestan Ministry of Sports .
