Coordinates: 28 ° 33 ′  S , 153 ° 30 ′  E Byron Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 565.8 km² and has about 31,600 inhabitants.

Byron is located in the far northeast of the state on the Pacific coast about 790 km north of the metropolis of Sydney and 150 km south of Brisbane . The area encompasses 58 hamlets and hamlets, including Bangalow, Billinudgel, Brunswick Heads, Byron Bay , Federal, Mullumbimby , Ocean Shores, South Golden Beach, Suffolk Park, Yelgun and parts of Clunes and Newrybar. The Shire Council is based in the town of Mullumbimby, which is home to around 3,248 residents.

Cape Byron is the most easterly point on the Australian continent.

The Byron Shire Council has ten members, nine councilors and a chairman and mayor, who are elected by residents of the LGA. Byron is not divided into districts.
