Marlen Esparza (born July 29, 1989 in Houston , Texas ) is an American boxer . She won a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and was world champion in 2014 , each in the weight class up to 51 kg.

Career

Marlen Esparza sees herself as a Latina. She attended Pasadena High School and came to the sport in 2002 through her father, an avid boxing fan who took her to boxing events as a child. She is a member of the boxing club Elite Boxing Houston . She is trained by Rudy Silva. She has also been voted "Latina Girl" in her hometown. She also earns her bread as a cover girl and in the advertising industry.

She achieved her first major successes in 2006. At the age of 17 she became American champion in the weight class up to 48 kg and in the same year she won a bronze medal in the same weight class at the World Championships in New Delhi . She came to victories over Gulseda Basibutun, Turkey and Jenny Hardings , Sweden , while she lost in the semifinals to the North Korean Ri Jong Hyang .

In 2007 she repeated her victory at the US Championship and reached the final at the Pan American Championship in Durán / Ecuador in the weight category up to 48 kg with a victory over Jacqui Park from Canada , in which she was clearly on points against Jessica Bopp from Argentina (4:19) lost.

In 2008 she became the third American champion and in Port of Spain / Trinidad & Tobago she was also the first Pan American champion. In the final, she defeated Daniele Souza from Brazil clearly on points (14: 2). She started this year at the World Championships in Ningbo / China , but lost to Jenny Hardings in the round of 16, which meant she was eliminated and finished in 9th place.

After winning her fourth US championship in 2009, she started again at the Pan American Championship, which took place in Guayaquil / Ecuador that year . She lost there against Thais Silva from Brazil on points (11:19), but still came in 3rd place. The US championship No. 5 - for the first time in the weight class up to 51 kg - was won by Marlen Esparza in 2010 with a points victory over Tyrieska Douglas, who is currently her toughest competitor. That year she took part in the World Cup in Bridgetown / Barbados again. She won there over Martina Arias Saenz from Costa Rica and Kim Hyung-ok from North Korea (12: 7) on points and lost in the round of 16 to Peamwilai Laopeam from Thailand (3: 5), which she only reached 9th place .

In the final of the US championship in 2011, Marlen Esparza defeated Tyrieska Douglas again. She did not take part in international championships that year, but played four international matches in which she defeated Mariana Caballero and Silvia Torres from Mexico , drew against Anna Rogovich from Ukraine and lost to Tatjana Kob from Ukraine.

In 2012 she won the US Olympic elimination in Spokane . She defeated Cynthia Moreno, Alex Love, Christina Cruz and Tyrieska Douglas. In Cornwall / Canada she was again Pan American champion, defeating Paola Benavides, Argentina (21:10), Mandy Bujold, Canada (16:14) and Erica Matos, Brazil (16:10) on points. Shortly afterwards she competed in the women's boxing world championship in Qinhuangdao / China . She showed good form there and won over Paola Benavides (20:10) and Thi Duyen Luu from Vietnam (28:13). In the quarterfinals, however, she had to admit defeat to the two-time Chinese world champion Ren Cancan on points (8:16) and came in 5th. At the Olympic Games in London this year , after a bye in the first round, a point win over Karla Magliocco from Venezuela (24:16) was enough to win the Olympic bronze medal. Ren Cancan, who beat Marlen Esparza just on points (8: 6), prevented an even greater success in the semifinals.

In 2013 Marlen Esparza in Puerto la Cruz / Venezuela was again Pan American champion in the weight class up to 51 kg after winning points in the final over Cleila Costa , Brazil.

In April 2014, Marlen Esparza surprisingly lost in the quarter-finals against Sandra Drabik from Poland on points at the 31st Feliks Stamm Memorial in Warsaw . Otherwise, she continued her successful streak in 2014. In September of this year she won the title of Pan American Champion for the fourth time in Guadalajara / Mexico, again defeating Claila Costa on points in the final. In November 2014 she became the first world champion in Jeju / South Korea in the weight class up to 51 kg. On the way to this success she landed points wins over Mjagmardulamyn Nandintsetseg , Mongolia (2: 0), Merjen Ishangulijewa, Kazakhstan (3: 0), Elif Nur Coskun, Turkey (2: 0), Cleila Costa (3: 0) and Lisa Whiteside , England (2-1 RS)
