Jai Tapu Opetaia (born June 30, 1995 in Westmead , New South Wales ) is an Australian professional boxer.
Amateur career
He began boxing at the age of eight, boxing as an amateur heavyweight division and training in Wyongah, north of Sydney . He was the 2009 Australian Student Champion, 2010 Australian National Golden Gloves Champion and 2011 Australian Junior Champion. In addition, he won the Junior World Championships in Astana in July 2011 , where he was able to prevail against the starters from Turkey, Kazakhstan, Russia and Germany.
In 2012, at the age of 16, he won the Australian Elite Class (adult) championships, the Oceanic Youth and Junior Championships in Papeete and the Oceanic Olympic qualification in Canberra . He then took part in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London as the youngest boxer (17 years old, 33 days) , but lost there in the round of 16 with just 11:12 against Teymur Məmmədov .
In November 2012 he also won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Yerevan . In 2013 and 2014 he won the Australian Championships again.
Professional career
He has been boxing with the professionals since August 2015. In July 2017 he became Australian Champion and OPBF Cruiserweight Champion. In October 2017 he defeated the undefeated Frankie Lopez by knockout in the first round and thereby became IBF Junior World Cruiserweight Champion.
