Benson Gicharu

Benson Gicharu Njangiru (born May 3, 1985 in Murang'a ) is a Kenyan amateur boxer and Olympic competitor from 2012 in flyweight and 2016 in bantamweight .

Boxing career

The police officer, who is around 1.67 m tall, boxes in the left-hand display of the flyweight (up to 52 kg). He won the Yamashita Cup in Nakuru in 2008 and the Kenyan championships in 2009. He also started at the 2009 World Championships in Milan , but lost there in the first fight against Michael Anu from Nigeria (10:11).

On a 5th place at the Commonwealth Championships 2010 followed a 3rd place at the East African Championships 2010. He achieved the greatest success so far at the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi , when he played against Camillo Kaikai from Papua New Guinea, Dexter Jordan from Guyana and Oteng Oteng from Botswana reached the final, got out there without a fight and thus won the silver medal. At the 2011 African Games, he lost to Oteng Oteng in the quarterfinals and was eliminated in 5th place.

At the remembrance tournament for Benazir Bhutto 2011 in Islamabad , he again reached the final against Abdul Waheed from Pakistan, Jack Tepora from the Philippines and Jasurbek Latipov from Uzbekistan, which he lost to Muhammad Waseem from Pakistan. He achieved another 2nd place in 2012 at the African Olympic qualification in Casablanca . He defeated Artur Guifutela from Mozambique, Olivier Lavigilante from Mauritius and Duke Micah from Ghana before losing again to Oteng Oteng in the final.

He then started at the 2012 Olympic Games in London , where he was eliminated in the first fight against the Egyptian Hesham Abdelaal (16:19). In 2013 he started bantamweight at the World Championships in Almaty , beat Jhonny Blanco from Venezuela (3-0) in the preliminary round, but lost in the round of 16 against eventual world champion Cavid Çələbiyev from Azerbaijan (1: 2). He won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow .

After failing in the quarter-finals of the World Olympic Qualifier in June 2016, he won the WSB / APB Olympic tournament in Venezuela and was therefore eligible to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games. There he was defeated in the first fight against Erdenebatyn Tsendbaatar .

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he lost to Peter McGrail in the round of 16 .
