Damien Duncan Hooper (* 5. February 1992 in Toowoomba , Australia ) is an Australian professional boxer in light heavyweight .

Amateur career

Damien Hooper started boxing at the age of eleven. The 1.83 m tall left-hand boom already took part in the 2009 World Championships in Milan , where he defeated Mathieu Bauderlique , among others , but then lost to Victor Cotiujanschi in the round of 16 .

In 2010 he convinced the middleweight division by winning the Oceanic Championships and the Summer Youth Olympic Games , defeating Joe Ward , Zoltán Harcsa and Juan Carrillo , among others . At the Commonwealth Games 2010 he was knocked out 3: 3+ against Anthony Ogogo in the round of 16 , but still won the silver medal at the World Youth Championships . He had beaten Tyron Zeuge , Wen Yinhang and again Zoltán Harcsa before he was defeated in the final this time against Joe Ward.

From 2011 he boxed light heavyweight, became Australian champion, won the Arafura Games , the President's Cup in Indonesia and the GeeBee tournament in Finland , where he also defeated Obed Mbwakongo . At the 2011 World Championships in Baku , he fought his way to the quarter-finals against Dinesh Kumar , where he lost to Julio César La Cruz just under 1:14 .

In 2012 he won international tournaments in Lithuania , Belarus and Serbia , defeating Kenneth Egan and Enrico Kölling , among others . He also started at the 2012 Olympic Games in London , where he defeated Marcus Browne , who started for the USA, in the preliminary round before he was eliminated in the second fight against the eventual Russian Olympic champion Yegor Mechonzew .

Professional career

Hooper switched to the professional camp after the Olympic Games and won his debut in April 2013. In July 2017, he defeated the until then undefeated Umar Salamow (19-0) and thereby became International Champion of the IBF and WBO light heavyweight associations.

Damien Hooper grew up in Dalby . He belongs to the Aboriginal ethnic group .

In 2014 he was sentenced to 18 months probation for assaulting a police officer. He was jailed in December 2017 on suspicion of multiple offenses, including assault, but was paroled again in January 2018. He was supposed to be arrested again in May 2018 for violating the conditions, but went into hiding. He was arrested in Toowoomba in June 2018.
