Harvest Moon is a video game series from the simulation genre. The series is published by the American publisher Natsume and has been developed by Appci Corporation since 2013 . The first part of the series was released in 2007 under the name Puzzle de Harvest Moon .

Before the beginning of the series, Natsume published the Japanese game series Bokujō Monogatari by Marvelous Entertainment in North America under the name Harvest Moon . In 2013, however, Marvelous decided to publish the series in North America itself. Since Natsume retained the rights to the name "Harvest Moon", the other parts of the Bokujō-Monogatari series were published in North America and Europe under the name Story of Seasons . Then Natsume decided to publish his own game series under the name "Harvest Moon".

history

The name "Harvest Moon" was originally used for the game series Bokujō Monogatari , which was developed by Marvelous Entertainment and published by themselves in Japan. Natsume was responsible for the localization and publication of the Japanese series in North America and, with the exception of the two puzzle games Puzzle de Harvest Moon and Harvest Moon: Frantic Farming , the name Harvest Moon was used for the publication of this Japanese series in Europe.

In 2014, Marvelous parted ways with Natsume as a localization partner for the North American market and decided to have the game published in North America by its own subsidiary Xseed Games . However, since the naming rights to the name "Harvest Moon" lie with Natsume, the Bokujō-Monogatari series was henceforth sold on the western market as the Story of Seasons . Natsume then decided to start his own video game series under the name "Harvest Moon" and had it developed by the Appci Corporation (initially called Tabot, Inc).

In 2014, Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley was the first part of this series for Nintendo 3DS .

Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley

Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley is the first farming simulation to be called Harvest Moon that was not developed by Marvelous Entertainment . The game was developed by Appci Corporation (then Tabot, Inc. ) for the Nintendo 3DS . It first appeared on November 4, 2014 in North America, while in Europe it was not released until June 19, 2015. Unlike the games from the Marvelous series , the game never appeared in Japan.

In The Lost Valley , the pawn ends up as a hiker in a valley and has to survive there as a farmer. As a special feature, the player can change the landscape made up of cubes by editing or removing the cubes. In addition, unlike in the series developed by Marvelous, you cannot visit a village where you meet other characters.

Harvest Moon: Village of the Sky Tree

Harvest Moon: Village of the Sky Tree is the fifth installment in the Harvest Moon series for Nintendo 3DS. The game was released in North America on November 8, 2016. In Europe, the game was published by Rising Star Games and didn't appear until June 2, 2017.

In the village of the sky tree , the player arrives at the eponymous village, which was once fertile but has decayed over time. The player has the task of cultivating a farm as a boy or girl and reviving the seven trees of the sky so that the power of the harvest goddess returns and the land becomes fertile again.

Harvest Moon: Light of Hope

With Harvest Moon: light of hope , the sixth part of the Harvest Moon series for appeared PC , Nintendo switch and Playstation 4 . The game was released worldwide on November 15, 2017 for Microsoft Windows , the versions for the Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4 did not appear until June 22, 2018. Although the game received rather mixed feedback and was criticized for the graphic style and lack of balance, it was possible Sales exceeded publisher Natsume's expectations.

In the light of hope , the player ends up stranded in a small, almost abandoned port city on an island, where he has the task of rebuilding the city and repairing the lighthouse there. To do this, as is customary for Harvest Moon, he has to run a farm and earn money through agriculture or mining.

Overall, with the exception of Harvest Moon: Frantic Farming , the games in the Harvest Moon series received average to negative ratings. The game series has been criticized several times for using the name "Harvest Moon", which many still associate with the Bokujō Monogatari game series , to sell quickly produced games under the well-known name.

This is how Daniel Kirschey from GIGA wrote about Harvest Moon: Light of Hope :

“Unfortunately, it is also the name [Harvest Moon] that wins over the buyers. If you don't know the background, you can do it without hesitation. Natusme uses the strength and awareness of the brand name. So why put a lot of work into a game when the name is so well known and loved that many will buy the game without hesitation anyway? "

Jan Wöbbeking from 4Players wrote about Harvest Moon: The lost valley :

“If you long for the variety of Farming Simulator games while playing Harvest Moon, then something is hugely wrong. "Why put effort into a farm game when casual gamers are now satisfied with titles like Farmville?" [...] If you are in the mood for an idyllic mix of building game and life simulation, you should get a predecessor or hope that it will be Marvelous Story of Seasons, which is made much more lovingly, brings to Europe after all. "

Commenting on the many changes in the game and the split from the Bokujō-Monogatari franchise, Graham Markay of Natsume spoke to Polygon in an interview , saying:

“It's always kind of changed. We've been involved in it for so long, [and] I look at it as Harvest Moon. I don't look at it like, 'We lost Bokujo.' [...] We wanted to evolve the series. "

"Everything changes. We worked on it for a long time and I see it as Harvest Moon. I don't look at it [Harvest Moon: Sky Tree Village] and think, 'We lost Bokujo [Monogatari].' [...] We wanted to develop the game series further. "
