Oleksandr Serhijowytsch Hwosdyk ( Ukrainian Олександр Сергійович Гвоздик , Russian Александр Сергеевич Гвоздик Alexander Sergeyevich Gwosdik , Eng. Transcription Oleksandr Hvozdyk * 15. April 1987 in Kharkov , Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic ) is a Ukrainian professional boxer and former WBC world champion at light heavyweight. As an amateur, he won a bronze light heavyweight medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics .

Amateur career

Oleksandr Hwosdyk boxed as an amateur in the light heavyweight division (-81 kg) and played around 250 fights. He won the World University Championships in Kazan in 2008 and participated in the 2009 World Championships in Milan . There he defeated Nikolajs Grišuņins and Assane Faye, before he was eliminated in the round of 16 with 2: 2+ against René Krause . At the 2010 European Championships in Moscow he defeated Gottlieb Weiss in the preliminary round , but then lost to Ainar Karlson in the round of 16.

At the 2011 World Championships in Baku he reached the quarterfinals with victories against Jovan Young, Imre Szellő and Ramil Aliyev, where he was defeated by Yegor Mechonzew . By reaching the World Cup quarter-finals, he had qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London , where he won a bronze medal. He had defeated Mikhail Dauhaljawez , Osmar Bravo and Abdelhafid Benchabla before he was knocked out in the semifinals with 13: 13+ against Ädilbek Nijasymbetow .

In 2013 he won the Summer Universiade in Kazan, beating Ainar Karlson, Kim Hyeongkyu , Michail Dauhaljawez and Dmitri Biwol . In addition, Hwosdyk was the Ukrainian champion in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

World Series of Boxing

In the 2011/2012 season, Hwosdyk started for Dynamo Moscow in the World Series of Boxing . During the season he played only two fights, but he won both. In the playoffs he was used both in the semifinals against Astana Arlans, Hwosdyk defeated Abdelhafid Benchabla here, and in the final against Milano Thunder. With his victory over Imre Szellő he got the only point of his team.

In the 2012/2013 season, Hwosdyk moved to the Ukrainian Otamans. Again his team reached the final, to which he contributed with two wins during the season against the representatives of the British Lionhearts and Italia Thunders and in the semifinals against Abdelhafid Benchabla from Italia Thunder. In the final he defeated Ehsan Rouzbahani of the Astana Arlans, but could not prevent the narrow defeat of his team. In the WSB he remained undefeated in nine fights.

Professional career

Hwosdyk has been boxing in the professional camp since 2014. He is under contract with Top Rank Promotions , his manager is Egis Klimas. His trainers are Marco Contreras and Teddy Atlas . He made his professional debut on April 12, 2014 in Las Vegas .

In April 2016 he won the NABF light heavyweight title against Nadjib Mohammedi and defended it against Tommy Karpency and Isaac Chilemba . In April 2017 he defeated Yunieski Gonzalez and thereby also won the NABO title. He defended both titles against Craig Baker in August 2017.

In March 2018 he defeated Mehdi Amar in the fight for the WBC interim world championship and was able to compete against the reigning WBC world champion Adonis Stevenson . He defeated this on December 1, 2018 in Québec by knockout in the eleventh round. In March 2019 he defended the title through TKO in the fifth round against Doudou Ngumbu.

On October 18, 2019, after three knockdowns by TKO, he lost in the tenth round against the Russian IBF world champion Artur Beterbijew .

Honors

On July 25, 2013 the Ukrainian President awarded him the Ukrainian Order of Merit 2nd Class for achieving high sports results at the XXVII. World Summer Universiade awarded in Kazan.
