geography

The Thiersee is located south of Vorderthiersee in the valley of the same name at 616  m above sea level. A. in a basin enclosed by the Maistaller Berg and Pendling . The lake is fed by twelve smaller tributaries, mostly from the Pendling massif, and drained at the north end via the 700 m long Thierseebach to the Thierseer Ache , which in turn flows into the Inn .

history

While the valley Tiersee has been mentioned since the 13th century, the lake in the Tiersee was first mentioned in documents from 1461 and 1474. At that time it was owned by noble gentlemen from the area. In 1751 he was sold to the Baumann zu Schröck in Thiersee by the administrator of the Hofmark Mariastein . The formerly common name Schröckensee or Schrecksee is derived from the farm name of this owner . In 1775 the Schröck estate and the lake belonged to Matthias Hofer. At that time the lake was stocked with pike , tench , hazel and carp and used for fishing. In 1930 it was declared a natural monument.

The name Thiersee probably comes from "animal", which means a wild animal in Middle High German and refers to the wealth of hunting animals in the wooded area.

Hydrology

The natural catchment area of the Thiersee is 6.2 km². Almost two thirds of it consists of forests and near-natural areas (64.2%). 15.9% are used for agriculture, 15.7% are built on and 4.2% are water bodies. In the immediate vicinity of the lake, agriculture is the main use. The mean discharge is 0.19 m³ / s, the water renewal time around 130 days. The average water temperature is 1.8 ° C in February and 21.6 ° C in August, and can rise to 27 ° C in summer. The lake is regularly frozen from January to March.

ecology

Water quality

The Thiersee is a moderately nutrient-rich body of water in a stable mesotrophic ground state with no signs of eutrophication. The viewing depth is between 2.5 and 4.5 m (2016). The occasional low depth of view is mainly due to the entry of suspended matter during floods and the abundance of limestone in the water. The bathing water quality was rated as excellent in 2016.

Flora and fauna

Long stretches of the banks of the Thiersee are lined with narrow vegetation. In the north there is a water lily society with the endangered and protected white water lily , spawn and pine fronds in front of a narrow strip of reeds . The east bank has a pronounced belt of reed and large sedge with common pond rush , reed , fever clover , stiff sedge , beak sedge and skullcap . At the mouths of the tributaries, flooding swaths and Bach speedwell grow visibly. In addition, tall perennials such as true meadowsweet and Davallseggenrieder can be found in the immediate bank area . The promenade surrounding the lake is accompanied by individual gray alders , ash trees , black poplars and planted willows .

Back from the seafront partly join intensive agriculture genützte lawns and partly wet meadows , which partly in a fen pass. The plants found here include broad-leaved orchid , powdery primrose , common cornflower lily , fever clover, pointed-leaved skewer moss , swamp star moss (Aulacomnium palustre) and related star moss . In addition to the degraded stands of a black alder break forest with black alder , ash and spruce on the drier edges, there are also sycamores , sycamore elms and summer linden trees . In the shrub layer prevails buckthorn ago. In the undergrowth there are not only moisture-loving species such as bitter foam herb , blood loosestrife and reeds, but also species from the beech forest such as the oneberry . The remainder of the quarry forest turns into a no longer cultivated flat moor , in which reeds, marsh skullcap and marsh stendellus spread.

The Thiersee is rather insignificant for water birds, only the mallard it serves as a breeding area.
