The reigning world champion Brazil could not convince playfully in group 3. The team won the group, but the 2-0 win against Mexico, the 0-0 win against the Czechoslovaks and the 2-1 win against the Spaniards were miles away from the 58 performance. In addition, Pelé injured himself so badly (muscle tear) after two games that he had to be replaced by the young Amarildo for the rest of the tournament. However, Amarildo did surprisingly well and turned out to be one of the best players in the World Cup. The Czechoslovaks unexpectedly came second behind Brazil, although the Spaniards (with Puskas, Gento and Suarez) were rated higher. As in the whole tournament, the defensive department dominated the ČSSR, which was able to set up an outstanding row of runners with Pluskal, Popluhar and above all Masopust.

In Viña del Mar met Brazil and England each other. An outstanding right winger Garrincha was the match winner in an encounter in which the Brazilians were able to fully convince for the first time. Garrincha's two goals and a goal from Vavá in a goal conceded to make it 1-1 from Hitchens, the center forward from Inter Milan , meant the 3-1 and the favorite's entry into the semi-finals.

On June 13, Chile and Brazil met in Santiago. The Brazilians also showed all their skills in this game. Twice Vava and Garrincha ruined all of Chile's dreams of the final, who in turn scored goals through Leonel Sanchez and Toro to make the final score 2-4.
final
68,679 | Estadio Nacional de Chile ( Santiago de Chile ) | Brazil | Czechoslovakia | Latichev ( Soviet Union ) | 3: 1 (1: 1) | 0: 1 Masopust (15th) 1: 1 Amarildo (17th) 2: 1 Zito (69th) 3: 1 Vavá (78th) |
A good 60,000 spectators wanted to see the final between Brazil and the surprise finalist Czechoslovakia in Santiago. The Brazilians had no recipe against the compact ČSSR defense like in the 0-0 preliminary round match at the beginning. The Czech defensive players countered the South American defense on the right side in the 15th minute and took the lead through Masopust. With the Pelé replacement Amarildo, the favorite equalized just three minutes later. Only through two blatant mistakes by the hitherto outstanding Schroif in the goal of the Czechoslovaks came Brazil to the decisive goals in the 69th and 77th minute for a 3-1 victory in a largely mediocre game. In the carefree final phase of the final, the Brazilians then showed their skills and won the title.
