Bill Adcocks

Bill Adcocks (actually William Arthur Adcocks ; born November 11, 1941 in Coventry ) is a retired British marathon runner .

In 1964 he finished second in the Welsh Open Championship and in 1965 English champion and second in the Košice Marathon . In 1966 he finished fourth in the Polytechnic Marathon and, starting for England, won the silver medal at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston .

In 1968 he ran the two fastest times of the year with 2:12:17 h in the Karl Marx Stadt Marathon and 2:10:48 h in the Fukuoka Marathon (the latter time was also his personal record). He finished second at the English championship and fifth at the Olympic Games in Mexico City .

In the following year he ran the world best time again with 2:11:08 in the Athens Spring Marathon. On the classic route from marathon to Athens , this time has only been undercut by Stefano Baldini in his 2004 Olympic victory.

In 1970 he won the Lake Biwa Marathon and was sixth at the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and in Fukuoka.

Bill Adcocks started for the Coventry Godiva Harriers.
