2008 doping ban

On March 9, 2008, the Slovenian was tested positive for doping on the occasion of the polar bear run , a half marathon in the Vienna Prater . The tests had been initiated by Wilhelm Lilge, the sports coordinator of Javornik's club LCC Vienna, in order to “clarify” about her and the long-distance runner Susanne Pumper , who is also part of the LCC Vienna, in view of the rumors of doping . Both tested positive for erythropoietin (EPO). Helena Javornik was then temporarily banned. The Slovenian Athletics Federation then acquitted her because of doubts about the doping tests carried out.

After the acquittal, the Slovenian started the traditional Faakerseelauf. Around 20 other runners, including Roman Weger and Markus Hohenwarter , then took off their starting numbers and boycotted the race. At the national Slovenian championships she became champion over 5000 meters. She had only one competitor in her run and did not start for LCC Vienna, but for Betnava Maribor.

At the end of July 2008, the international athletics federation IAAF appealed against the decision of the national federation to the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS). The provisional suspension came into force again, so that Javornik was not allowed to start at the Olympic Games in Beijing . In March 2009, the IAAF's objection was upheld by the Sports Court and Javornik was banned until June 11, 2010 for doping.
