Pertisau from the east

Pertisau ( 952 m above sea level ) is a district of the municipality of Eben am Achensee in the Austrian state of Tyrol . With Maurach, he constitutes the center of tourism on the Achensee .

Pertisau borders directly on the Karwendel nature reserve . Its easternmost limestone reefs drop abruptly to the lake north of Pertisau. From the village itself, three wooded valleys and alpine pastures (Gerntal with Pletzachalm and Gernalm, Tristenautal and Falzthurntal with Falzthurnalm and Gramaialm) extend only gently upwards into the mountains. The valley ends are formed by towering two-thousand-meter peaks such as Sonnjoch , Lamsenspitze , Dristenkopf and Rappenspitze .

The oldest documents from the St. Georgenberg-Fiecht Abbey , in whose fiefdom the Achensee was in the 14th century, concern the grazing rights in the valleys around Pertisau and the offer to residents to seek protection in Münster if there is a risk of avalanches , to which the state canonically law under.

Since the 15th century, the Habsburgs , who remained rulers until 1918, used the forests around Pertisau for hunting and the lake for fishing. Under Maximilian I , the Princely House was built for this purpose in 1466 as an imperial inn. It is said that the last knight spent his most beautiful hunts in Pertisau. His great-grandson Ferdinand II expanded the hunting lodge in the years 1568–70 with a summer house and stables.

Tourism on the Achensee began around the middle of the 19th century. Pertisau is the starting point and destination of the Achensee shipping, which has existed since 1887; the terminus of the Achenseebahn (since 1889) , which operates as a steam-powered tourist train in summer, is 2 kilometers south of Pertisau ( Haus Seespitz ).

Today Pertisau is a center of mostly upscale hotels, guest houses, holiday apartments and alpine inns.

In the area around Pertisau, oil shale , from which the so-called Tyrolean rock oil is extracted, has been mined in open-cast mining since 1902 . The oil shale in this region is approx. 180 million years old and was pushed upwards from the former sediment layers of the dried-up seabed when the Karwendel Mountains were folded.

The pioneer of oil shale mining on Lake Achensee was the geological autodidact Martin Albrecht, who accidentally found the rock near the Gaisalm on the western steep bank of the lake. The first mine with primitive manual mining techniques, named after the wife of the discoverer Mariastollen , was destroyed by an avalanche in 1917.

However, Martin Albrecht had already discovered a second, more productive tunnel in 1908 in the Bächental . The third generation of the family business Tiroler Steinölwerke Albrecht GmbH & Co. KG is still based here. Initially, porters had to carry the mined rock twice a day in 25 kg tubs on their backs on a steep path over the Gröbnerjoch to the processing facility in Jenbach. It was not until 1940 that mules took over this work, and in 1946 a material ropeway was built.

The stone oil extracted from the oil shale (so-called Tyrolean stone oil ) is processed into cosmetic and medicinal products (ointments, creams, massage oils, tonic, shower gel, shampoo). The self-marketing aims at a pain-relieving effect for muscle tension and rheumatic complaints.

The so-called Vitalberg von Pertisau is a documentation set up in 2003 with a café and sales point in the form of a glass pyramid; it defines itself as a "museum" and was created in cooperation between the company and the tourism association. Here, the geology of the region and the history of the company, mining methods and products are explained using documentation in a replica mine. The first lighting system from 1902, destroyed by the avalanche of 1917, has been reconstructed and was operated manually by two miners: it took 8 hours to extract 4 liters of oil from 120 kg of oil shale. At a temperature of approx. 450 ° C, the oil emerges from the rock in gaseous form and is extracted drop by drop in a condensation plant. Today, three fully automatic shaft furnaces and condensation towers that run continuously in the summer months do this job.

There are hourly bus connections via Maurach to Jenbach (with a connection to the Kufstein – Innsbruck railway line and the Zillertal Railway ) and twice a day to Tegernsee . Pertisau is part of the Tirolean Transport Association .

Tourism and sport

The gently rising valley entrances, which are paved in the lower section, are often frequented hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing routes. There are challenging via ferratas in the Karwendel .

In the expiring Tristenau valley there was a 9-hole golf course , which was expanded to 18 holes in 2005. The Achensee Golf Club, founded in 1934, is one of the oldest in Tyrol.

The Zwölferkopf ( 1480 m above sea level ), which is accessible by a cable car ( Karwendel mountain railway ), is the location of a paragliding school and, in winter, a ski area. In addition, there is a toboggan run and a so-called reflection path.

The Achensee Run has been taking place in September since 2000, and leads around the Achensee in a 23.2 km long circuit.
