Gary Staines

Gary Staines ( Gary Martin Staines ; born July 3, 1963 in Welwyn Garden City ) is a retired British long-distance runner .

Life

In 1988 he came in 13th place at the Olympic Games in Seoul over 5000 m . The following year he finished 14th at the 1989 World Cross Country Championships in Stavanger and won silver with the British team.

In 1990 he started for England at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland fourth over 10,000 m and won silver over 5000 m at the European Championships in Split . At the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in 1991 , he ran over 5000 m in 13th place.

Then he turned to running on the road . In 1993, 1994 and 1996 he won the ten miles of the Great South Run . At the Great North Run he finished fifth in 1995, fourth in 1996 and seventh in 1997. In 1996 he finished ninth in the London Marathon and fifth in the Chicago Marathon .

In 1984 he became English champion over 3000 m indoors, in 1995 outdoors over 10,000 m.

He was briefly married to the Australian long jumper Nicole Boegman . Today he and his second wife, former sprinter Linda Keough , run a sporting goods store called Runners Roost in the US state of Colorado .
