Maura Viceconte

Maura Viceconte (born October 3, 1967 in Susa , † February 10, 2019 in Chiusa di San Michele ) was an Italian long-distance runner who specialized in the marathon .

Life

In 1995 she won the Venice Marathon and in 1997 the Monaco Marathon .

She took part in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , but ended the marathon early. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney she was in the lead after 15 kilometers and finally finished 12th.

At the marathon of the European Athletics Championships in Budapest in 1998 she took bronze behind Maria Manuela Machado (POR) and Madina Biktagirowa (RUS).

At the Vienna City Marathon 2000 she set the current course record as well as the Italian national record at the time with 2:23:47. She achieved further victories at the Rome Marathon (1999) and the Prague Marathon (2002).

On February 11, 2019, Viceconte committed suicide in her hometown in Chiusa di San Michele at the age of 51 .
