Erba Tiki Gelana (born October 22, 1987 in Bekoji ) is a former Ethiopian long-distance runner . Her greatest success was the 2012 Olympic victory in the marathon .

Athletic career

Tiki Gelana started her sporting career in Addis Ababa in 2004. There she ran a 10-kilometer road run in 34:36 minutes in November .

In 2006 Gelana won the San Silvestre Barcelonesa and in 2007 the 10 km from San'yō. In 2008 she finished sixth in the Delhi Half Marathon . In her debut on the 42.195 km distance she finished third in the 2009 Dublin Marathon in 2:33:49 h. The following year she was fourth in the Los Angeles Marathon , the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and in Dublin .

At Amsterdam Marathon in 2011 she managed a huge breakthrough. With 2:22:08 h she set a course record and stayed almost seven minutes below her personal best.

In 2012, a victory at the Kagawa Marugame Half Marathon was followed by another spectacular course record in the Netherlands: With a lead of almost five minutes, she prevailed at the Rotterdam Marathon and was the first Ethiopian female runner to go under 2:19.

2012 Gelana won at the Olympic Games in London the gold medal in the marathon. In an exciting decision, she only started the decisive attack 500 meters from the finish. Although the marathon started slowly, her winning time of 2:23:07 h even set a new Olympic record.

At the 2013 London Marathon , Gelana ran a time of 2:36:55 h on April 21.

In 2014 she achieved a time of 2:26:58 h in the 2014 London Marathon .

In Tokyo she ran the marathon on February 22, 2015 in a time of 2:24:26.

Tiki Gelana ended her international sporting career in 2016. At the Boston Marathon she finished 14th with 2:42:38 h.
