Hitomi Niiya ( Japanese 新 谷 仁 美 , Niiya Hitomi ; born February 26, 1988 in Sōja ) is a Japanese long-distance runner .

Athletic career

Hitomi Niiya gained her first international experience at the World Cross Country Championships 2004 in Brussels , where she finished 19th in the U20 race in 21:47 minutes. The following year she was 13th at the World Championships in Saint-Étienne in 21:39 min and won the bronze medal in the 3000 meter run at the Youth World Championships in Marrakech in 9: 10.34 min . At the 2006 World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka , she came back to 13th place in 20:25 minutes. At the age of 18 she started the 42.195 km distance for the first time and immediately won the Tokyo Marathon 2007 in 2:31:02 h and was second in the Hokkaidō Marathon 2008 and eighth in the Nagoya Marathon 2009.

At the 2010 Cross Country World Championships in Bydgoszcz , she started as a junior in adult races for the first time after three participations and came in 31st place after 26:30 min and in the following year at the World Championships in Punta Umbría 26th in the 5000 meter run she won at the Asian Championships in Kobe , she won the silver medal behind the Bahraini Tejitu Daba in 15: 34.19 minutes and thus qualified for the World Championships in Daegu , where she finished 13th in the final with 15: 41.67 minutes . The following year she took part in the Olympic Games in London in part, finishing in 10,000-meter race in 30: 59.19 minutes to ninth place . In addition, she was eliminated over 5000 meters with 15: 10.20 minutes in the lead . At the World Cross Country Championships 2013 in Bydgoszcz she was 82nd and at the World Championships in Moscow she finished fifth in 30: 56.70 min. She then temporarily ended her career due to numerous injuries.

After a four-year break from competition, she competed for the first time in 2018 and won the silver medal over 10,000 meters behind the Bahraini Shitaye Eshete at the 2019 Asian Championships in Doha in 31: 22.63 minutes . At the end of September she took part in the World Championships in Doha over the same distance and finished eleventh there in 31: 12.99 minutes . In January 2020 she won the Houston Marathon half marathon and set a new national record with her time of 1:06:38 h.

In 2012 Niiya became the Japanese champion in the 5000 meter run and in 2013 over the 10,000 meters.
