Geoffrey Kiprono Mutai (born October 7, 1981 ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specializes in marathons .

Career

In 2008, in March 2008, he won the Monaco Marathon in a time of 2:12:40 hours. In October he set a new personal best of 2:07:50 hours in the Eindhoven Marathon .

In 2009 he finished eighth in the Daegu Marathon . As in the previous year, he won the 10-kilometer run at Loopfestijn Voorthuizen and set a course record and a personal best with 27:39 minutes. In the Eindhoven Marathon, he improved both his personal and the course record to 2:07:01 hours. He ran the last 2.195 kilometers in 6:05 minutes and was faster than Ronaldo da Costa , Paul Tergat and Haile Gebrselassie in their world records.

At the start of the 2010 season, Mutai won the RAK half marathon . At the Rotterdam Marathon he finished second behind his compatriot Patrick Makau Musyoki in an excellent 2:04:55 hours . In the 10,000 meter run he won the bronze medal at the African Athletics Championships in Nairobi . He then achieved another strong time in the Berlin Marathon with 2:05:10 hours, but Patrick Makau Musyoki had to admit defeat just like in Rotterdam. A victory in the Delhi Half Marathon followed in November .

In early 2011, Mutai won the Kenyan elimination competitions for the Cross Country World Championships in Punta Umbría in a superior manner . He could not quite live up to his role as favorite in the world championships with fifth place, but helped with his performance to secure the Kenyan victory in the team championship.

A few weeks later, Mutai won the Boston Marathon . With his winning time of 2:03:02 hours, he undercut Gebrselassie's world record by 57 seconds. However, the Boston route did not meet the criteria required by the IAAF , the World Athletics Association , for the recognition of world records. On the point-to-point course, the runners benefited from a strong tailwind on competition day. The second-placed Kenyan Moses Cheruiyot Mosop also stayed well below the official world record in his marathon debut with 2:03:06 hours. In the following places, the Ethiopian Gebregziabher Gebremariam and the American Ryan Hall clearly undercut their respective personal bests and the old course record of the Kenyan Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot from the previous year (2:05:52 hours). Specifically, the Boston racetrack missed two of the conditions specified in the international competition rules. Rule 260, paragraph 28b allows an average gradient of a maximum of 0.1% of the distance, in this case 42 meters. Paragraph 28c stipulates that the distance between start and finish should not be more than 50% of the route length. The Boston Marathon has a net gradient of around 140 meters, and the distance between start and finish is almost the full competition distance. Nevertheless, the day after the race, the organizers announced that they would apply for Mutai's time to be recognized as a world record. Mutai himself argued that the route was the prescribed length and, with its many hills, was very demanding despite the net gradient.

In June Mutai returned to Boston and won the first edition of the BAA 10K by a large margin over the Ethiopian Gebregziabher Gebremariam and Mosop. He increased his best performance in the 10-kilometer road race by 20 seconds to 27:19 minutes. At the end of July he won the Bogotá half marathon in a course record time of 1:02:20 h. In November he crowned his competitive season with a win at the New York City Marathon . With a time of 2:05:06 h, he undercut the old course record of the Ethiopian Tesfaye Jifar by more than two and a half minutes.

In 2012 he failed to defend his title in Boston. In unusually hot weather he had to give up after 30 km with stomach cramps and was then not nominated for the Olympic Games in London . At the Ottawa Race Weekend he won over 10 km. In September Mutai won the Berlin Marathon by one second over his compatriot Dennis Kipruto Kimetto and missed the world record set by Patrick Makau Musyoki in the same place last year by 37 seconds. Mutai won the overall ranking of the World Marathon Majors 2011/12. In 2013, he ran the RAK half marathon with 58:58 minutes for the first time under 59 minutes, which he finished in third place. In November he was able to repeat his victory at the marathon in New York.
