Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot (born August 10, 1988 in Bomet , Rift Valley Province ) is a Kenyan marathon runner .

Cheruiyot, who by his own account has been training professionally since 2005, ran a half marathon in Eldoret in 1:03 h in 2007 . In 2008 he joined William Kiplagat's training camp , who persuaded him to take his first trip outside Kenya and start the Frankfurt Marathon . Since the organizers of the run had exhausted their athlete budget, the athlete paid for the trip out of his own pocket, with the assurance that his expenses would be reimbursed by the organizer at a time below 2:14.

At the Frankfurt race, his first run over the 42.195 km, he surprised the competition and the professional world by breaking away from the top group at km 35 and setting a course record with 2:07:21 h.

In 2009 he was fifth in the Boston Marathon in 2:10:06 h, twelfth in the Rotterdam Half Marathon and second in the Frankfurt Marathon in 2:06:23 h.

In 2010 he improved the course record of his namesake Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot at the Boston Marathon by almost one and a half minutes to 2:05:52.

Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot is the fourth of five children; his father died in 2007. He is looked after by Jos Hermens from Global Sports Management and is not related to the better-known marathon runners Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Evans Kiprop Cheruiyot .
