Zoppo di Gangi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zoppo di Gangi , actually Giuseppe Salerno (* 1570 in Gangi ; † 1620 ), was a painter of panel paintings and frescoes of the late mannerism of Spanish style in Sicily .

Life

Giuseppe Salerno was called “Zoppo di Gangi” (“The lame man from Gangi”) due to a walking error. This is how he signed his works. He was trained in the workshop of Filippo di Benedetto Paladini (1544-1616), a Mannerist painter. This was followed by a stay in Rome, where he continued his education in Guido Reni's workshop . From 1598 his work in Sicily is documented. In 1603, for an unknown reason, he had to seek refuge from the revenge of enemies in the Capuchin monastery of Carini . In the following years he painted numerous panels for churches all over Sicily.
Another, less important painter named Gasparo Vazzano (1570–1633), who was probably his classmate and at times also his collaborator, was named under the name “Zoppo di Gangi” . Named after Zoppo di Gangi is an exhibition room with paintings from the 18th century in the Diocesan Museum in the Archbishop's Palace of Palermo .
