Erich Schleier

Erich Schleier (* 1934 in Hamburg ) is a German art historian , author and curator .

Life

Schleier studied art history and archeology at the universities of Hamburg , Freiburg and Munich . In 1966 he received his doctorate from the University of Hamburg with a thesis on the Roman work of the painter Giovanni Lanfranco . From 1971 to 1999 he worked as a curator for Italian painting in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin (from 1978 chief curator). As an author, he has written for national and international journals in his field, such as the Jahrbuch der Berliner Museen , The Burlington Magazine , The Art Bulletin, Revue de l'Art, La Revue du Louvre et des Musees de France, Paragone , Studi di storia dell 'Arte, Arte illustata and Antiquità viva , mainly about Italian painters from the 16th to 18th centuries. Until 1983 he compiled a catalog of works on Lanfranco's oeuvre. From 1982 he took part in important exhibitions on scientific committees. In 2000, the University of Naples II made him an honorary doctorate for his work .
