Andrea Emiliani (born March 5, 1931 in Predappio , Forlì-Cesena province in the Emilia-Romagna region , Italy ; † March 25, 2019 in Bologna ) was an Italian art historian and connoisseur of medieval painting.

Life

Emiliani began his studies at the University of Urbino and then went to the University of Bologna . He received his doctorate from the University of Florence under Roberto Longhi , with Francesco Arcangeli as a second reviewer .

He was responsible for the protection of historical and cultural assets in his home region as superintendent and in 1974 founded the Istituto per i Beni Culturali della Regione Emilia Romagna . He was director of the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna and from 1970 to 1986 professor of museum studies, the history of style and art history at the University of Bologna. He was also president of the Accademia di belle arti di Bologna of the Accademia Clementina in Bologna. He was the curator of various exhibitions at home and abroad on the art and art treasures of Bologna. His research focused on the painters Federico Barocci and Giovanni Francesco Guerrieri (1589–1657) as well as the Bolognese baroque painters Ludovico Carracci , Guido Reni , Giuseppe Maria Crespi and others.

Museum work and teaching activities

Emiliani was responsible for the redesign of various museums and from 1955 was a consultant for the Pinakothek in Bologna. Other museums were the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Ferrara (from 1969 to 1992), the Palazzo Milzetti Bolognesi di Faenza (since 1974) and the Pinacoteca Civica di Forlì . He created the organizational plan for the Museum of the Abbey of San Salvatore and the associated Museo di Santa Giulia in Brescia .
