Chiesa Madre

As Chiesa Madre or Chiesa matrice (from the Latin. Ecclesia mater, Mother Church) in is Italy the main church designated a place. Occasionally, especially in the larger towns, the term “Duomo” ( cathedral ) is used for this, even if it is not a current or former bishop's church.

These main churches have their own patronage , which is mostly left out or only partially used in common parlance. So z. B. Santa Maria Annunciata in Erice usually simply referred to as Chiesa Madre or Duomo dell'Annunziata , Maria Santissima della Visitazione in Enna also called Duomo di Enna .

In episcopal cities , the cathedral is the chiesa matrice.
