The Church of Maria SS. Della Visitazione is the main church ( Chiesa Madre ) of Enna in Sicily . It is also known as the "Duomo" (cathedral), although it is not a bishopric.

history

The church is on Via Roma in Enna. It was founded in 1307 by Eleonora, the wife of Friedrich II . In 1446 it was destroyed by fire and then rebuilt.

The outer

At the beginning of the 18th century, the baroque facade was built from tuff stone . The facade was a model for other church facades in the south-eastern part of Sicily. The side walls are in the Renaissance style and are located on Via Roma in Enna.

The inner

The church consists of three naves . The interior is characterized by the wooden coffered ceiling. The ships are separated by thick columns made of black basalt . There are paintings by Guglielmo Borremans . The left apse shows a ribbed vault as it originally existed, the right apse is decorated with paintings and stucco work from the 18th century.

There is a statue of Maria SS. Della Visitazione by the altar . The statue is from 1412. Maria SS. Della Visitazione is the patron saint of Enna. Every year on July 2nd there is a procession in honor of the patroness .
