Luigi Bommarito (born June 1, 1926 in Terrasini , Province of Palermo , Italy , † September 19, 2019 ibid) was Archbishop of Catania .

biography

Luigi Bommarito received on 2 April 1949, the sacrament of Holy Orders . In the 1950s he worked as a pastor in Monreale .

On March 18, 1976, Pope Paul VI appointed him . as titular bishop of Vannida and auxiliary bishop in Agrigento . The episcopal ordination received his Sebastiano Cardinal Baggio , Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops , on June 1 of that year; Co- consecrators were Corrado Mingo , Archbishop of Monreale , and Giuseppe Petralia , Bishop of Agrigento . On May 2nd, 1980 Pope John Paul II called him Bishop of Agrigento and on June 1st, 1988 appointed him Archbishop of Catania. He was inducted into office on September 14th of the same year. With the elevation of the Archdiocese of Catania to a metropolitan bishopric in 2000, he became the first metropolitan of the newly founded ecclesiastical province of Catania .

Pope John Paul II accepted Bommarito's age-related resignation on August 6, 2002. Most recently he lived again in his hometown Terrasini.
