Salvatore Gristina (born June 23, 1946 in Sciara , Sicily , Italy ) has been Archbishop of Catania since 2002 .

Life

Salvatore Gristina was born on June 23, 1946 in Sciara , a town in the Province of Palermo in Sicily . On May 17, 1970 he was ordained a priest.

After studying at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy , he went into the diplomatic service and worked at the missions of the Holy See in Ivory Coast , the Antilles and Brazil . Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on July 24, 1979 .

On July 16, 1992 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Palermo and at the same time titular bishop of Musti in Numidia , and on October 3, 1992 he was ordained episcopal in the cathedral of Palermo .

On January 23, 1999, he was appointed Bishop of Acireale and on June 7, 2002, Archbishop of Catania . On August 6, 2002, he was inducted into office in Catania Cathedral .

Salvatore Gristina is vice-chairman of the Sicilian Episcopal Conference .

He is Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and Prior of the Commandery of Catania.
