Carmelo Ferraro (born September 12, 1932 in Santa Croce Camerina , Ragusa Province , Italy ) is retired Archbishop of Agrigento .

biography

Carmelo Ferraro was born on September 12, 1932 in Santa Croce Camerina, a small town on the southeast coast of Sicily . On July 3, 1955, he received the sacrament of ordination .

From 1957 to 1962 he taught Catholic theology at the Episcopal Seminary in Ragusa . From 1962 to 1978 he was archpriest of the main church of Vittoria in the diocese of Ragusa .

On March 30, 1978 Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the bishop of Patti . After receiving his episcopal ordination on May 13th by Salvatore Cardinal Pappalardo , he was inaugurated on May 27th of the same year in the cathedral of Patti .

On November 3, 1988, he was appointed Bishop of Agrigento by Pope John Paul II , which at that time was still a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Monreale . His inauguration took place on December 10th of the same year in the Cathedral of Agrigento . With the elevation of the diocese of Agrigento to an archbishopric and metropolitan seat in 2002, Carmelo Ferraro became archbishop and first metropolitan of the newly founded ecclesiastical province of Agrigento .

Ferraro was the delegate for health in the Sicilian Episcopal Conference .

On February 23, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. He submitted his resignation due to reasons of age and appointed the previous auxiliary bishop in Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela , Francesco Montenegro , as his successor.
